Not just any chickens though, these are rescued battery hens, rescued through the efforts of the battery hen welfare trust. A coop has been homemade, using FSC certified wood, and the paper shreddings will be used as bedding for the hens, who are laying fabulous free range eggs. The waste from the chickens will then be added to the compost bin for my organic home grown veggies.
There are currently over 2 million battery hens in the UK, each only has the space of an A4 piece of paper! To find out more, visit the battery hen welfare trusts website http://www.bhwt.org.uk/
